Launching Your New Site

Now you've got all your content ready, your website address purchased, and your email set up, it's time to launch your new site. You are now ready for the world to see your site!

There are only a couple of steps that you need to do to make your site live. Unfortunately, though, every hosting service is different, so it's hard for us to explain the process step by step. Below are the general instructions for what you'll need to do, but you'll need to figure out exactly how to apply these instructions to the specific company where you purchased your web address (your domain).

First things first:

The first step is to find your new site's "IP Address". It's located on the bottom of the Site Preferences page in your Greenhouse Dashboard. Copy this number and save it for the next steps.

Option 1: Call the company where you purchased your web address.

If you got your domain from a reputable company, they should have pretty decent phone support. This is probably the easiest and most straightforward option (especially if you don't work in an IT department).

Here's what you'll need to tell them: "I am hosting my site with another company, and I need to change my 'A Record' to point to a different IP Address (give them the IP Address for your site that you found in the step above)." Also, tell them that you don't want to change any other records besides your "A Record". (No MX Records, no CNAMES, nothing).

If they can do that, great! You're done. Your web address should start pointing to your site within an hour or two. Once you see it, go spread the word that you're a web guru.

Option 2: Use a web interface to change your settings.

Note: We have specific walkthroughs for Go Daddy and Network Solutions. If you purchased your domain through either of these companies, click below for step-by-step instructions:

If you have any other company, here are the general steps you should follow. Unfortunately most companies' control panel sites are a bit cryptic, so you might want to grab a techie friend to help you (or of course, feel free to call us).

1. Log into the service where you purchased your website address.

2. Get to the place where you can manage your domain settings or DNS records.

3. Change your "A Record" to your site's IP address (the one you got from the beginning of this help article).

That's it! Your new website will now be live as soon as your domain company fully processes the change.

*Note: Your "A Record" is not the same as your "NS (Name Server) records". If you only have the option of changing your NS records, you'll probably have to call your domain company and tell them to change your A record over the phone.

Also, make sure you DO NOT change any MX records. These are the rules applied for your email. If they get messed with, you might be in a little trouble with your mail.

If you get lost at any point please give us a call and we'll help you sort things out.

Also, please note that it may take up to 24 hours for you to be able to view your site after you've changed your A Record.
